Burglary is decreasing across Manchester
– lets keep it that way! By following these simple tips, you
can avoid becoming a victim.
- If leaving your house empty, leave a light on and consider
fitting timer switches on lights - remember it may start getting
dark before you return
- Think about fitting a burglar alarm and if you have one,
remember to switch it on when you go out or go to bed
- Restricting access to your rear garden reduces your chance
of suffering a burglary
- Remove house and car keys from locked windows/doors and keep
them out of sight
- Fit locks to all windows that a burglar could use and remember
to keep them locked
- Fit British Standard deadlocks to external doors and always
use them.
- Always shut and lock doors and windows even if you are out
for a short time. (1 in 5 burglaries happen through open doors
and windows)
- Move all valuables out of sight of windows.
- Keep your garage and garden shed locked and tools secure
and out of sight.
- Good security lighting and crunchy paths can put burglars
off. Prickly plants also act as a deterrent.
- Fit a spy hole and chain to your door, and never let anyone
in until you have thoroughly checked their ID.
JEWELLERY THEFT
Did you know that thieves could target homes for jewellery, especially
around religious or cultural festivals, weddings and other special
occasions? This is because burglars know that this is often when
more jewellery will be kept in the house.
Local Community Safety Co-ordinator, Imtiaz Shah is raising
awareness to let families know the risks: “We must be vigilant
and take care of our valuables. Make sure that your jewellery
is locked away at home at all times, preferably in a safe. Don’t
leave anything on display and review your locks and security
systems in your house, are they up to scratch?” Residents are
also advised to make sure their homes look occupied when they
are out. Leave some lights on use a light timer, these are inexpensive
and an effective deterrent. Also make sure that doors and windows
are shut and locked and that you take photographs of your jewellery
as a record.”
