PRIORITIES

Crime reduction is not the sole responsibility of the Police or any other single organisation or group. It is the responsibility of everyone. Together, the agencies in the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) work as one team with one overriding objective: to make Manchester a safer place to live, work and enjoy.

Operating as one team is at its best when we are responding at a neighbourhood level to the concerns raised by local residents. We now have neighbourhood policing in Manchester to tackle the crime and disorder of most importance to people who live in each area. Neighbourhood policing is a way of multi-agency working. It means all the local agencies are known to local people and are working together to address the crime concerns that have been identified by residents in their area. That is the core of our Strategy.

The success of Manchester CDRP’s Strategy for 2005-08 means that there are now far fewer victims of crime than there were four years ago. The 2008-11 Crime and Disorder Strategy sets out the vision for building on these reductions and describes how the CDRP will deliver the national key crime priorities of:

  • Tackling violent crime
  • Reducing serious acquisitive crime (ie crimes of theft such as burglary and robbery)
  • Addressing the crime that is of most concern to local residents
  • Reducing re-offending
  • Reducing the drivers of crime, particularly drugs, alcohol and youth crime.

The CDRP will also concentrate its efforts to improve the confidence of our residents so that they feel genuinely safer. To do this we will:

  • Engage with the local communities effectively to identify their concerns and to utilise local knowledge
  • Have responsive local partnerships that work closely with residents to address problems swiftly and effectively
  • Communicate effectively about the work that we are doing and the outcomes we achieve.
